  1. What responsibilities does a data visualizer have toward the viewer? Should designers actively counteract known visual biases (e.g., reference frames, categorical perception), or is it acceptable to rely on conventions even when they mislead? Where does ethical responsibility end and viewer responsibility begin?

  2. Cairo pushes visualization toward density and expressive richness; Franconeri et al. push it toward perceptual economy and bias management. Where do these goals conflict in practice, and how should designers decide which to prioritize? Could this tension be operationalized into a checklist or set of heuristics for evaluating figures?
